UPDATES FROM MS. A:
Dear family and friends,
I hope this email finds you well. As you know, I’ve been the Social Emotional Counselor over at Ben Holt College Prep Academy for three years, and each year, I have facilitated an event called BenTalks, a TedTalk like event to support students in speaking out about what is most important to them. Over the last two years, I have been so grateful for your participation as judges and event sponsors.
BenTalks is a truly meaningful event for me, as it is a venue for students to share their passions and ideas with the greater community. Our young people are resilient, energetic people who I believe will change our world. This year, we have over 40 student speakers, and we hope to provide scholarships to three (or more) of them to make college more accessible for the youth we serve.
The third annual BenTalks will take place on April 13th from 8:30am to 12:30pm. I am writing to invite you to join me for the event as honorary judges and to ask you to consider sponsoring a scholarship for highly rated speakers participating in BenTalks (all donations are tax deductible).
Click here to sign up to judge! If you are interested in sponsoring a scholarship, feel free to review the attached sponsorship details and email me directly. I hugely appreciate your support in supporting my students to develop as young people and to pursue a college education.
Hello BenTalks 2019 Speakers –
Thank you so much for signing up to participate in BenTalks! I am extremely pleased at the amount of speakers we have as well as the quality of the topics being presented this year. Our judges are truly in for an exciting event. Many of you have asked what happens next in preparation for BenTalks, and I wanted to share the following timeline with you. Please make sure that if you have any difficulty meeting the deadlines as outlined here, you are communicating with me about it in advance.
March 15th __ An outline is due to Ms. A (either share via google docs or have a printed copy to me) – please note that this is during break, but I do expect to have the outline shared with me. It does not have to be a long, detailed outline, but simply an overview/roadmap of your speech to help direct you in writing.
March 29th–A rough draft is due to Ms. A (either share via google docs or have a printed copy to me)
April 5th — All speeches must be given clearance to present by Ms. A
April 5th – April 12th Counseling team members will be available for rehearsals!
April 13th –BenTalks 2019!
I am looking forward to seeing the drafts start to come in and watching your fantastic speeches take form. Remember, you can always turn in your outlines and drafts earlier than the due dates listed. J Please feel free to email me with questions or pop into room 153.
The third annual BenTalks will be hosted on April 13th, 2019!
This is a TedTalk-like event, where student speakers will deliver 5 – 8 minute speeches about a topic of their choice. Speeches can be informative, persuasive, motivational, etc. Partner entries will be accepted (but please note, scholarship winnings will be split with your partner). Please use 1 form for both people if you decide to speak with a partner.
Suggested topics include:
> educationally related topic areas
> motivation/sources of motivation
> social justice or community change
> social media
> interests and hobbies
> issues that you deeply care about
For this year’s competition, entries will be divided into two sub-groups for judging. The planned sub-groups will be informational speeches and personal narratives.
Scholarships from local businesses will be awarded to highly-ranked participants. Participants will be judged on their poise and professionalism, delivery, speech content, creativity/originality, etc. BenTalks will be judged by local community leaders and business people.
Please reach out to Ms. A for any questions!
